It’s an exciting time to be a fan of the NFL! We’ve just finished another wild offseason, and with it came the moment of truth – the NFL draft! The 25th overall pick of the draft belonged to my beloved Jets, and they made a splash with the selection of Utah quarterback Zach Wilson. I’ve been a Jets fan all my life, and I couldn’t wait to see what Wilson brought to the table!
Right away, I was blown away by Wilson’s unique skill set. Here’s a QB who takes the intensity of Russell Wilson and mixes it with the scrambling ability of Lamar Jackson. Zach’s awareness and pocket presence also rivals both of them, making his passing game shockingly sound. He’s no one-trick pony though, as he’s shown to be a capable rusher as well. That, combined with his strong arm, has Jets fans dreaming of the next great QB.
Despite all the praise Wilson’s gotten, there are definitely some kinks he’ll need to work out. When it comes to Zach’s pocket presence, for example, he’s got a tendency to bail on the pocket too quickly. On top of that, he’ll need to work on timing and accuracy if he’s going to make the most of his weaponized arm.
That being said, I’ve seen enough in the brief highlights we’ve gotten to have some hope for the future. Zach Wilson is still young, and with the right development, I think he could become an elite NFL QB in no time. There’s something special to Wilson’s athleticism and it’s perfectly complemented by his incredibly strong arm.
I understand that the jury’s still out on Wilson, but it’s hard not to get excited for what lies ahead. With very few games to evaluate him on, this will be our first full season getting to watch Zach and see what he can do. I assume opposing teams are already formulating their game plans to stop him, which will be scary enough for there to be some growing pains. Still, I think with the right coaching and tutelage, Zach Wilson can become an elite NFL quarterback in the very near future.
As for the specifics, I’m eager to see what kind of weapons the Jets have in store for him. There’s no shortage of capable receivers in New York these days, and with the talks of a possible Jamal Adams trade swirling around the league, the defense could also be top-notch. Of course, I’d also love to see the Jets address the offensive line. Zach Wilson was sacked 37 times last year – a number that’ll need to be kept to a minimum if the Jets want to become competitive.
In the end, it’s an exciting time for Jets fans. We’ve already seen the team make some big moves, bringing in All-Pro caliber players such as Corey Davis and Carl Lawson. Topping it off with a franchise quarterback like Zach Wilson is only going make the team stronger, and there’s no reason to think that won’t be the case in 2021.
The next few weeks are sure to be interesting, with teams across the league looking to make trades and moves to improve their rosters. Here’s hoping the Jets are one of those teams, and when the regular season starts we will have a new and improved version of Gang Green to cheer for!
