The NFL has some of the best offensive linemen in the world. It is often overlooked, but these big men are the backbone of a successful football team. I personally think that the best offensive linemen in the NFL are a combination of talent and tenacity. They have to be able to physically impose their will on the opposing team’s defensive line, while also having the intelligence and quick decision-making skills to make the right play at the right time.
My all-time favorite offensive lineman is D’Brickashaw Ferguson. Not only was he a studious player, he had excellent technique. He also had great leadership qualities. He could set an example on and off the field for the rest of the team to follow. He was an absolute joy to watch and I admired the way he played the game.
Another favorite of mine is Joe Staley, the San Francisco 49ers left tackle. He had incredible footwork and quickness off the snap. His athleticism allowed him to easily be able to manhandle opposing defenders. He was also very underrated in terms of protection. He almost never allowed a sack, while consistently keeping mounted pressure on quarterbacks.
I also have a lot of respect for the late great Jon Ogden. If you ever watched him play, you could tell that he loved to compete. He attacked opposing linemen each and every play, and he had probably the best feet of any offensive lineman in the past 20 years. He also had a great attitude and was always willing to take on any challenge thrown at him.
Finally, when I think of some of the top offensive linemen, I think of Joe Thomas. He was a strategic player who utilized every technique possible to protect the quarterback. He was solid and consistent no matter who he went up against. He could also drive defenders back in the run game and open up some really big holes for running backs.
It’s safe to say that the best offensive linemen in the NFL don’t always get the recognition they deserve. While their jobs may be less glamorous than their offensive counterparts, these men are the key to a successful game plan. Without their hard work and dedication, the beautiful plays we witness would not be possible.
