I’m sure most of you have heard the news that Drew Brees has finally retired from the NFL after 20 long years. It really took me by surprise, I mean he was playing at such a high level as recently as last season and he would have easily continued his career well beyond this point, but it’s time to hang up his cleats and pass the torch on to the next generation of NFL stars.
When I think of Drew Brees, I do not just think of him as an NFL quarterback, but as one of the all-time greats in the game. His stats alone are impressive, but it was his infectious energy and attitude that made him stand out on the field.I remember watching him on Sundays with awe as he effortlessly guided the Saints to three straight playoff appearances.
I also think of how appreciative Brees was for his time in the league, always expressing gratitude for everything it gave him.He was always quick to thank his coaches, his teammates, and even the referees for their roles in his success. It’s no wonder he has so many fans that have been devoted to him for all 20 years.
The thing I appreciated the most about Brees was his leadership. He was never afraid to take risks and speak out about issues he felt passionate about. We saw this clearly when he stood up for the Black Lives Matter movement and fought for better treatment of athletes in the league. It takes a lot of courage to speak up against power and he did it with grace and professionalism.
I will also always remember how Brees handled himself off the field. He was always respectful of his opponents and showed genuine appreciation for the competition. He also set a great example for young athletes on how to show up to practice and games on time with a professional attitude.
Drew Brees brought so much joy to football fans around the world, and it will be hard to imagine the league without him. But, although he is gone now, his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of football fans everywhere.I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the success he has earned in the NFL and I hope he enjoys a well-deserved retirement.
