Wow! I had no idea that NFL overtime rules were so controversial. Recently, I heard someone asking whether they were actually fair or not. The first thing that came to my mind was: “It’s hard to tell”. I mean, on one hand, overtime gives teams a chance to prove themselves and change a game that was otherwise won. That’s how every team, despite possible differences in talent, has an opportunity to prove they are the strongest. On the other hand, though, some say that the rules are too strict with no room for error.
Now, having done a bit of research, I get why some people think overtime rules are not fair. To begin with, the period is only fifteen minutes, which isn’t enough time to make a comeback. What’s worse, one team has a possession advantage since they get the ball first. Honestly, the idea of ”sudden death” feels like cheating to me. If both teams are on equal footing, I think there should be separate periods instead, just like in regular time.
That said, I think the overtime rules are actually quite fair. It’s true that a team only has a limited amount of time to make up for lost ground, but it’s totally possible. To illustrate this, just look at some of the great comebacks that have occurred in the NFL. With just a few minutes left, any team can turn the tables and alter the outcome of the game.
Furthermore, overtime rules make sure that both teams are well rested and ready for the challenge. Both teams know they have a limited amount of time, so that only motivates them to show what they’re made of. Of course, this doesn’t guarantee a win, but it certainly gives them a good chance.
What’s more, I think those overtime rules are pretty fair when it comes to the players as well. It puts both teams in a difficult position, sure, but it also highlights their strength and willpower. When you look at it that way, it’s hard to say that NFL overtime rules aren’t fair.
Still, I’m interested to hear what you think of the NFL overtime rules. Do you think they’re too strict, or do you believe they’re fair enough? I’d love to know!
