When I heard that there might be Jewish NFL players, I was absolutely shocked. I mean, I’m Jewish and sports have never been something I’m involved in – being a movie buff and lover of reading is more of my jam. But, hearing about Jewish NFL players made me fascinated. I just had to know more about this.
As it turns out, there are a handful of Jewish NFL players. Guys like Mitchell Schwartz, Jordan Norwell, Max Garcia, and Julian Edelman are just a few guys who quietly admit their Jewishness every now and then. And, of course, there’s the possibly the most famous Jewish NFL player of all time –Kicker Al Morse – who was given a great honor of lighting the torch at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
As far as I’m concerned, these guys are total heroes. I mean, here they are, living out a dream that I’m sure not a lot of Jewish people never even thought possible. Not only that —but, being part of an almost exclusively non-Jewish group and maintaining his faith. That takes strength and courage that only a few can possess.
As a Jewish person, these guys give me hope and inspiration. Despite the prejudices and stigmas that may come with being Jewish, they’ve successfully combined their faith and talents to participate in one of the world’s most widely watched sports. They are truly an example to the world and definitely remind me that, no matter where you come from and what religion you follow, you can reach any goals you put your time and dedication towards.
I think that these athletes are also a great representation of the Jewish people and show that faith still has its place in today’s sports. Even though this faith may not always be immediately visible, it’s something that binds the players with a sense of pride and identity that we can all be inspired by.
When you’re a Jewish NFL player, you’re representing something much larger and you understand the importance of that. Seeing guys like these, contribute to the game and be successful is a wonderful reminder that anything is possible. Sure, it’s an extra challenge for these players but they’re able to show that success is achievable – if you keep faith and dedication throughout your journey.
These athletes make being a sport lover so much more exciting for me. Not only can I appreciate their talents and skills on the field but, I can also be inspired by the talent they have to keep true to themselves and their faith. I think the world needs more people like them!
