It’s amazing to me how many wins an NFL Coach can get in an entire career. Just take Bill Belichick from the New England Patriots, for instance. As of 2019 he had racked up 317 regular season wins, the most wins by any coach in history. That’s incredible to me!
Throughout his career, Belichick has seen a lot of success. He was the Head Coach of the Patriots for two Super Bowls and the Defensive Coordinator of the New York Jets for one. He has won 9 Division titles and been awarded 5 NFL Coach of the Year awards. To say that Belichick has had a winning career is an understatement.
I think one of the main factors that gives Belichick this edge over other coaches is his longevity and consistency. In his entire career he has only been with two teams – he coached for the Cleveland Browns for five seasons and has been with the Patriots since 2000. That means he has been able to stay in one environment for almost two decades, gaining knowledge and honing his craft in one place. The result is no surprise – a long string of wins and championships.
There are of course many other remarkable coaches in the NFL. Some other top coach’s who have graced the league include Don Shula who totaled 328 wins, George Halas who had 318 wins, and Tom Landry who came in just behind Belichick at 294 wins. Each of these coaches has their own success story, and when you compare them to what Belichick has achieved, it is even more incredible.
Even when you take into account the success of contemporary coaches like Pete Carroll from the Seahawks or Andy Reid from the Chiefs, Belichick still stands out. Watching the Patriots and Belichick over the years has been nothing short of amazing. It is a testament to his work ethic, and a reminder that hard work pays off.
The way Belichick has influenced modern NFL coaching is also remarkable. It is clear that he has a system in which he wants to place players and how he wants to run practices, and other coaches have taken note and followed suit. Belichick’s system of scouting, recruiting and developing talent has become the new normal, and other teams have tried their best to replicate or even improve upon it.
I don’t think any NFL coach will be able to match Belichick’s record anytime soon. The combination of his skill as a coach, plus his long standing tenure with the Patriots, has creatd something that no other coach has yet been able to match.
In addition to Belichick’s win record, he has also been incredibly successful in other areas. His teams have set records for total points, touchdown passes and fewest turnovers. He has created a dominant defensive style and been known for being able to adapt and out-coach his opponents. Plus, he has continued to work on improving the overall game, not just winning.
Belichick is also a leader off the field – he often takes the time to mentor other coaches and help them improve and hone their skills. His willingness to share his knowledge and provide advice has allowed many coaches over the years to find success. It just goes to show what a truly remarkable coach he is, and why he’ll continue to be considered one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time.
Since Belichick’s record-breaking win, other coaches have come close but never quite been able to match it. Mike Shanahan (Redskins, Broncos) has the highest win ratio of any active coach with 181. 2, but he’s actually quite a ways behind Belichick. Sean Payton (Saints) is next on the all-time wins list with 162, but again, that’s still quite a way back.
The standard has been set, it seems like Belichick’s record will be hard to beat. It’s like that old saying goes, they don’t make them like they used to. The only thing left to do is for us to celebrate this remarkable feat, and reflect on how Belichick has influenced the game of football in such a drastic way.
