I was scrolling the news the other day, and I could not believe my eyes, there were already talks about how many black quarterbacks will be leading the NFL in 2022. This is an issue that has come to life more recently, marking an incredible shift in the league’s attitude towards more diversity amongst its players.
It’s no secret that there has always been a lack of representation for African American players, and in the NFL specifically, a systematic bias towards white quarterback talent. Over the past few seasons, however, there have been remarkable changes that have seen a significant influx of black quarterbacks entering the league.
In fact, the numbers have now hit an all-time high in the league, with five black quarterbacks starting this season alone. There’s Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson and Cam Newton, each a stellar player in their own right. This also marks the first time we’ve had five players of color leading an NFL five in history.
However, looking ahead to 2022, the prospects for the league seem even brighter yet. A recent report from Pro Football Focus suggested that seven black quarterbacks will be starting by 2022, which is an increase of two from the numbers we’re seeing today. This is incredible news not only for the NFL, but for black representation in the sport.
I personally think this news is amazing, but for one, there is still a ways to go to make sure African American players are receiving a fair playing field, but this is a massive step in the right direction. It also shows that the NFL is able to adapt and change to ensure that its talent pool is more reflective of society, and not limited by the bias of the past.
But, of course, this news begs the question – which black quarterbacks are most likely to be starting in 2022? As of right now, the list is likely to include Dak Prescott, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, Robert Griffin III, Deshaun Watson and Sam Darnold.
Many of these players have already had success in the NFL, giving us a glimpse into what they could be capable of in two years’ time. Meanwhile, those who have yet to start may use this news as the motivation to prove themselves capable of leading an NFL team in 2022.
I’m looking forward to seeing what this impressive roster will look like in two years’ time. Who knows, they could very well take the league by storm and solidify their places in NFL history. There’s no doubt the competition between these quarterbacks will be intense, and I can’t wait to see it all unfold!
