When I tell people I’m a Veteran of the United States Armed Forces, their eyes often light up with admiration for what I’ve done and the service I’ve given for our country. As much as I’m honored to be a Veteran, I’m thankful for what the National Football League (NFL) does for Veterans nationwide.
Since 2012, the NFL has supported United States Veterans through the NFL Foundation, which is an independent arm of the league and a 501(c)(3) non-profit. The foundation supports veterans of all branches of the military, with programs that help connect Veterans with jobs, medical services, educational opportunities, and community support.
The NFL helps Veterans with their unique Salute to Service program, which assists veterans in numerous ways. This includes working with the USO to recognize members of the military who go above and beyond in service to their country, providing tickets to Veterans to attend NFL games, and providing grants to organizations that work with veterans.
Additionally, the NFL works with the Bob Woodruff Foundation to research and provide effective treatments to improve the health of Veterans. This includes cutting-edge research, advanced technology, leading health care providers, and more.
The NFL also works to provide grants to aid Veterans in the transition from military service back into civilian life. These grants help veterans adjust to living back in their communities by providing them with job training, counseling services, and housing assistance. The NFL also partners with USA Cares to provide emergency assistance to veterans who are in need of financial help.
And on Veteran’s Day, the NFL recognizes veterans with special game-day activities, such as honoring active military with a coin toss before the game. Teams also hold special pregame ceremonies to recognize the sacrifice Veterans have made for our country.
Beyond these initiatives, the NFL’s mission is to give back to Veterans, to thank them for their service and commitment to our country. The league has contributed millions of dollars to Veteran-focused programs since 2012, and fans have given millions more.
Veterans don’t receive the same recognition they deserve, but the NFL is there to thank them for their service and show its appreciation. It is a great organization that supports all those who have given so much for our nation, and I’m proud to be associated with it.
