I never imagined having growing up having such an admiration for ESPN Sunday NFL Countdown hosts.​ Growing up I was always enthused about Sunday Night Football on ESPN and the announcers always made it exciting to watch.​ I remember back in the day when my favorite hosts were Chris Berman, Tom Jackson, Steve Young, and Michael Irvin.​

Having these co-hosts of ESPN Sunday NFL brought excitement to a different level.​ That day was no longer just about the game itself, but about learning more about the players and teams.​ I liked that these four had a great bonding experience and worked so well together when it comes to commentating.​

Their unique personalities and insights gave us a better understanding of the game.​ Chris Berman’s playful attitude during the show would often get us laughing and on some occasions, pissed off.​ Nonetheless, the combination of him and Tom Jackson gave us the perfect balance between annoying and interesting commentary.​ They both had a powerful way of telling us the main game points without overdoing it.​

Things changed when Steve Young and Michael Irvin were added to the mix in 2017.​ They added more intensity to the show, which made it even more enjoyable.​ Steve Young especially, was able to bring in more current information/news on the sport.​ On the other hand, it was really enjoyable to see Michael Irvin’s knowledge and passion for the game every Sunday.​

It was amazing how each one of ESPN Sunday NFL’s co-hosts had a key role to make the show successful.​ Chris Berman most likely was the leader of the group, as he had the experience and knowledge, while Steve Young, brought fresh content on the teams and players.​ Tom Jackson and Michael Irvin definitely had their part to play toalling up to make a great broadcast experience.​

Whenever I hear ESPN Sunday NFL Countdown, the memories of these hosts come back to me, making me appreciate their work even more.​ These hosts never shame to admit when players make great plays and when rookie are doing amazing.​ They strive to truthfully criticize teams that pay poorly and give accolades for those who shine.​

It’s a big job to bring the most intense football experience to viewers every Sunday night.​ The show must have just the right colors and commentary to entertain us.​ That’s why I am so grateful for each of the ESPN Sunday NFL Countdown hosts and the hard work they do every week.​

I try to stay away from the NFL.​ I guess you could say it’s been an adamant decision for me.​ A lot of people around here are passionate about the NFL, but I’m definitely not one of them.​ And don’t get me wrong, I understand why some others are…it’s just not for me.​ I’m sure it looks real impressive and all on TV, with the big stars and their fancy uniforms.​ But for some reason, I just can’t get into it.​ I come from a family of more “old school” fans.​ Football was the thing to do on Sundays, not the NFL.​

It might be because I’ve never had a team that I could root for.​ In the NBA, on the other hand, I’ve had a favorite team since I was a kid.​ I’m a huge fan of the Celtics, and I began watching them way back when.​ There’s something special about having a team that you’ve actually watched since they were just getting started.​

The NFL just doesn’t have that same allure for me.​ Don’t get me wrong, I know the history behind the league.​ From players like Joe Montana, to teams that have won multiple Super Bowls, the NFL has some of the greatest stories in sports.​ But I just don’t feel the same connection to it that a lot of other people do.​

I’m also not a big fan of how the league has treated its players.​ From labor disputes to disciplinary actions, I’ve seen NFL players treated as if they’re just pawns in some corporate game.​ And while I understand that some of the decisions were made in the interest of the “greater good,” I still feel like some of the players were unfairly treated.​

There’s also the matter of the NFL’s image.​ I remember when I was a kid and the sport was revered as something sacred.​ Players and coaches alike were respected and admired.​ But now, it seems as if the NFL has taken a much darker turn for the worse.​ From the players involved in domestic violence cases to the recent allegations of drug use, the league seems to be in a never-ending spiral.​

It’s also becoming way too commercialized for my liking.​ From the stadium sponsors to the TV ads, it’s hard to avoid all the excess.​ I like sports, but I don’t like when they become about money and profits before winning and competition.​

So at the end of the day, I’ve made the conscious decision to stay away from the NFL.​ I just don’t feel a connection to the league, and there are too many red flags for me to ignore.​ I know I’m in the minority on this one, but it’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it.​

Going beyond that view, I think the NFL has a particularly nefarious role in American culture, and it’s essential to recognize the damage it inflicts.​ From the perpetuation of an incredibly fanatical and often violent culture that centers around the league to the way the NFL skews political policies to benefit itself, some of the implications of the NFL are nightmarish and far-reaching.​

I think it’s also worth noting that the NFL often awards huge payouts to players for on-field accomplishments that don’t necessarily impact the outcome of a game.​ Not only does this create a bogus incentive for players to overdo it and risk their health, but it also skews the way the game is played.​ Instead of working together as a team, some players are gunning for individual stats, and that’s not what the game is meant to be about.​

Something else that strikes me about the NFL is the complete lack of responsibility it shows for its own actions.​ Whether it’s the way it handles domestic violence cases, its labor disputes, or its political power, the league often chooses to shift blame and walk away from its own responsibility.​ That type of lack of accountability isn’t something I want to be associated with.​

Then there’s the often-befuddling issue of player safety.​ Despite its refusal to recognize the connection between head trauma and long-term health effects, the league continues to dish out huge contact penalties and suspensions for dangerous play.​ It’s a problem that the league has failed to address, and it’s one of many examples of its irresponsible behavior.​

The bottom line is, the NFL does a lot more harm than it does good, and that’s why I choose to stay away from it.​ It’s an unethical league with a terrible track record, and I can’t in good conscience support it.​ There’s no shortage of sports on TV, and the NFL isn’t the only option.​ Maybe it’s time to try something new.​

It’s a great way to help kick off the NFL season, and I’m sure these games will be exciting for the diehard fans to watch.​ Even if they may feel a bit weird to watch without the presence of the usual Thursday night anthem, we still get to enjoy the spirit of football.​

Plus, these games help break up the regular schedule and make us feel like we’re seeing something new and different.​ Whether it’s increased viewership or just a way to show off their skills, I can’t help but think that the league is trying to keep us engaged and entertained for as long as possible.​

My first experience with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills was a bit of a blur.​ Few fans if any had expected the highly-touted rookie quarterback coming out of college was about to lead his team into one of the biggest achievements in franchise history.​ Having been a Bills fan since I was a kid, I remember that excitement and anticipation as the season kicked off.​ Little did I know that the Bills would go on to a ten-game winning streak capped off with a trip to the playoffs and eventual Super Bowl—an accomplishment that still stands as the longest winning streak in NFL history—all capped off with a trip to the hall of fame for quarterback Jim Kelly.​

It was euphoric to say the least.​ During that time, the NFL was a wild and crazy game, as teams would go from underdogs to superstars with just a few wins under their belt.​ Supporters of the Bills, the blue and red faithful, were alongside the team through thick and thin—buoyed by the exuberant spirit of the players and the outstanding coaching of Marv Levy.​ Even as the fans watched the team go through periods of highs followed by valleys, the team was kept afloat by the loyal supporters, who loved the idea of pursuing greatness every Sunday.​

It wasn’t always smooth sailing.​ The Bills have had moments—decades even—of disaster, where the team would seem to hit every wrong turn in the road.​ Some of those moments included a few truly poor and controversial coaching decisions, player feuds, fan boycotts, and lackluster performances.​

But the Bills also had some great moments over the years—displaying grit and determination even in the face of impossible odds.​ In the mid-1990s, the Bills twice made it to the Super Bowl, coming up just inches short of the big prize both times.​ It was a testament to the power of the team—despite playing some of the worst offenses in NFL history, the Bills had the heart and sheer will to make it to the biggest stage.​
